An International Medical School in a modern teaching hospital
HumanitasThe Istituto Clinico Humanitas is a highly specialised general hospital in Rozzano, south of Milan. Humanitas was opened to the public in 1996 and has been accredited by the Italian National Health Service as a provider of in- and outpatient services. The complex, designed by the British architect James Gowan with the aid of a study group of engineers, architects, hospital personnel and managers, was built using the most innovative healthcare technologies.
Humanitas is what is known in Italy as an Istituto di Ricovero e Cura a Carattere Scientifico (IRCCS - a Scientific Institute of Admission and Care) recognised by the Ministry of Health and the regional government of Lombardy as a centre of excellence in terms of the quality of its healthcare services and its ability to translate the results of research and innovation into everyday clinical practice. The Fondazione Humanitas per la Ricerca (Humanitas Research Foundation), directed by Prof. Mantovani, is active in Humanitas. The research work of Humanitas scientists is monitored by a Scientific Advisory Board that includes the Nobel prize-winner, Prof. Rolf Zinkernagel.
The mission of Humanitas is aimed at the constant improvement of the efficacy of treatment through innovative medical methods and investment in technology to guarantee increasingly higher quality standards. The Istituto Clinico Humanitas is also a teaching centre for the degree course in Nursing Sciences and Biotechnologies offered by Università degli Studi di Milano.
Humanitas has more than 600 beds and is the first Italian general hospital to obtain quality certification from the Joint International Commission. Its diagnostic, therapeutic and rehabilitation work respond to the needs of local, national and international patients. The "Humanitas case study" was presented to Harvard University MBA students in the framework of its “Innovations in Health Care” course on the planning and management of high-quality healthcare services.
The Istituto Clinico Humanitas has a highly specialised Accident&Emergency department visited by about 60,000 patients a year.
